Chuma Whahid Rasul is Christopher Hicks-Marshall, writer, poet, essayist, author, publisher.
A fixture on the New York spoken word scene in the late 90s, he started the now defunct Pauline Publishing, and in 1998 published his first book of poems, The Third Eye of a Butterfly, which amassed enough success to give him the opportunity to subsequently publish, in the year of 1999, alifepoeminprogress by Tantra. He made an appearance on the 2005 poetry compilation CD, Les Nubians Presents Echos, Chapter One: Nubian Voyager after he and his poetry partner, Fisiwe, won a contest to perform with Les Nubians while they were on tour. That CD also went on to become a published anthology in the year 2006 entitled Nubian Voyager: Poetry and Music from the Urban Edge.
He is the President, Chief Operating Officer, and Executive Editor of Chuma Spirit Books, LLC -- An Independent Publisher and Bookseller, and his company has successfully published five books in total. In 2006, he published his second book entitled The Affectation - Overcoming Shame and Removing The Mask, which is an autobiographical story chronicled through poetry and prose. In 2007, he published Lovewords - Poetry From a Place Called Love by Fisiwe, and in January he published this third book My Ancestors Traveled Them Home, which is a collection of memoirs and poems about his struggle and triumph over the death of his loved ones.
His aspirations are to pursue his degree in Professional Writing/Journalism (currently he attends Georgia Perimeter College part-time), continue his personal composition of poetry books, complete a novel that is already in the works, and provide an outlet to continue to publish other writers. He also endeavors, through his online blog, Chuma Spirit Magazine, to bring to the world a consciousness of spirituality, well-being, positive health, and the triumphs of others with a story to tell. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he now resides in Atlanta, Georgia with his family.
